Asked by someone who has just moved
“When do I need a Thai driving licence, and how do I get one?”
My answerShane Ruddle, 20+ years in PattayaIf you live here and you're here to stay, get one. With your home licence it's mostly paperwork and a few quick tests.
Bring your passport with a non-tourist visa, your home licence, a certificate of residence or work permit, passport photos, and a medical certificate from any clinic. Go very early, as they limit numbers each day.
An agent costs around ฿2,500 to ฿3,000 and holds your hand through it. The first licence lasts two years, then you renew for five.
It also works as ID at banks, government offices and hotels, so you don't have to carry your passport.
Up to date as of November 2026. Rules in Thailand change often, so check the current position before you act.
