Asked by a driver renting for a month
“How do I know a rental car's insurance is actually valid?”
My answerShane Ruddle, 20+ years in PattayaCheck that it's insured for hire and rental use, not private use. You're entitled to see the policy.
Some operators use cheaper personal insurance and rent the car out anyway. If you have an accident and the insurer finds out it was a rental, the policy can be invalid.
With a reputable company you can safely assume it's right. With someone on Facebook, or a car parked by the road with no office, always ask to see it.
Up to date as of November 2026. Rules in Thailand change often, so check the current position before you act.
