“Should I rent a scooter or a car?”
My answerShane Ruddle, 20+ years in PattayaA car, if your budget allows it. Only rent a scooter if you're an experienced, confident rider.
Most rental scooters only carry the compulsory government insurance, which covers injuries to other people up to a limit, not you or the bike.
Police checkpoints do stop tourists. Without a licence they're happy with, it's a ฿500 fine, paid at the police station.
If you're set on a scooter, stay off Sukhumvit Road until you've built some confidence on the quieter beach side.
