Getting a Thai Driving Licence in Pattaya

As the owner of a car rental company, I get asked about Thai driving licences a lot. Here's how it works.

When do you need a Thai licence?

People often say after about six months. But the unwritten rule is simple: if you live here and you're here to stay, get a Thai licence.

Do it yourself or use an agent?

You have two choices. A lot of people now use an agent, who charges around ฿2,500 to ฿3,000. You still have to go in person and do some things yourself, so it's really a hand-holding service. But if you don't want to think about the paperwork and don't enjoy government offices, it's probably money well spent.

What do you need?

If you're doing it yourself, you'll need:

  • Your passport, with a non-tourist visa
  • Your licence from home (otherwise you'll have to take the full test)
  • A certificate of residence, or other proof you live here, such as a work permit
  • Passport photos
  • A medical certificate, which any clinic can do in a few minutes for a couple of hundred baht

Then head to the licence office very early in the morning to get in the queue, because they limit how many people they see each day.

What happens on the day?

You'll watch a video on Thai traffic laws, then do a few quick physical tests: colour blindness, depth perception, peripheral vision and reaction time. That's about it if you already hold a licence. If you've never had one, there's also a theory test and a practical driving test.

How long does it last?

The first licence is valid for two years. After that you renew it for five years, with a fresh medical certificate but no driving test. Don't let it lapse for too long, or you may have to start again.

Why is it worth it?

At a police checkpoint, you're golden. Once you have a Thai licence, there's really nothing to worry about if you're stopped.

It also works as ID at the bank and at government offices, so you don't have to carry your passport around. When I check into a hotel and they ask for my passport, I give them my Thai driving licence and that's fine.
