Sukhothai from Pattaya: Cycling Round Thailand's Old Capital

I'd lived in Thailand for 20 years and had honestly never heard of Sukhothai. My girlfriend is into history and trekking, and it was her suggestion. What a recommendation. If you love history, I'd highly recommend it.

Getting there

We drove. It's a long way from Pattaya, so we broke the journey with a stop in Kanchanaburi on the way, which is worth doing anyway.

Cycle round the ruins

Sukhothai was Thailand's old capital, and the ruins are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We rented bicycles for about ฿50 a day. They weren't great bikes, but it didn't matter. Cycling round the old city is the best way to see it: the temples, the ruins and the moats that protected the temples and the homes of the old kings and queens.

It's similar to Ayutthaya, but in my opinion far more spectacular.

One night is enough

We stayed one night, and that was enough. We spent the day cycling round the historical park, then in the evening went to the market in the centre, like you do in any Thai town. It's a lovely setting for a walk and some street food.

When to go

Go in the high season. We went over New Year, when it was in the low 20s and not busy, even at that time of year. Because you're outside all day walking and cycling, the heat really matters. In the rainy season, when it's stifling, it wouldn't be much fun.

Who it suits

History lovers and couples. It's not great for families: there's a lot of walking outdoors, and kids generally aren't that interested in history.
