Retiring in Pattaya: Advice From 20 Years Here
I'm not retired, but after 20 years running businesses here I've met a lot of people who came to Pattaya to retire. Here's what I've seen.
Why do retirees choose Thailand?
The cost of living, the lifestyle, the weather, and how welcoming the locals are.
Why Pattaya in particular?
Of the usual places where lots of Westerners retire, Pattaya is the cheapest. There's also a lot more to do, a much bigger community, and a far more mixed crowd of people.
Many retirees here are men, and for some of them Pattaya is a chance to start again, including finding a new relationship.
Is money the biggest problem?
Usually not. Some people arrive thinking they haven't quite got enough. But once you adjust your lifestyle, so you're not out drinking, partying or eating in the best restaurants all the time, it becomes very affordable. For real numbers, read Is Pattaya Expensive?
What catches retirees out?
Culture shock. And not just retirees: tourists and anyone who comes here assume things work the same way as back home.
Take the law. We get people from abroad who feel they've been treated unfairly over something small and want to get lawyers involved. In practice, small grievances rarely get anywhere here, and nobody is going to take up a minor complaint for you. That takes some getting used to. (More in the cultural mistakes foreigners make.)
The pace is another one. Here it's very much "tomorrow, tomorrow". In the West, things get done on time because that means customers and business. It's very different here, and it takes a while to get your head around.
My best advice for retirees
Try to learn some of the language. You don't need to be fluent. Basic Thai won't earn you special respect or different treatment, but it tells people around you that you're not a tourist. You've chosen Thailand and settled here. It just makes living here that little bit easier.
