Hiring a Maid or Housekeeper in Pattaya
Having help at home is more within reach here than in the West. Here's what to know.
Is it common for expats to have a maid?
Not common, but definitely more common than in the West, simply because of the price.
I don't have a full-time maid myself. I have someone come in to clean, because my place doesn't need more than that.
What does it cost?
For a full-time maid, anything from around ฿12,000 to ฿20,000 a month.
Live-in quarters make a big difference. If you can offer them, you have a much better chance of finding someone good who'll stay. Without them, expect to pay closer to ฿20,000.
How do you find someone?
You have a few options. An agency is the safest way, though there are fees involved.
A personal recommendation is probably the best way, but it's tough. You'll often see posts on Facebook from a family who is leaving the country and is very happy with their maid. Those maids get inundated with offers. In my view, they tend to choose based on the living quarters, then things like the children's ages and how big the house is.
What about work permits?
Many housekeepers here come from neighbouring countries such as Myanmar and Cambodia, and they need a work permit. I've been through the process recently myself. Work permits for workers from neighbouring countries are different from the ones for Western expats: there's still a process, but there are fewer stipulations, and it's a bit easier. The rules do change, so check the current requirements, or let an agency handle it.
In my experience, the staff from Myanmar I've employed have been very hardworking, very honest and very good employees.
My advice
Work out how much help you really need first. If it's a full-time job, live-in quarters will help you find and keep someone good. Whoever you hire, make sure the paperwork is done properly.
